EMERGENCY’s 2025 Social Report: results, people and voices from the field

EMERGENCY Bilancio Sociale 2025

Amapola supported EMERGENCY in the development of its 2025 Social Report, providing strategic consultancy, shaping the storytelling, editing the content and conducting video interviews with local staff.

Telling the story of EMERGENCY’s work means engaging with an organisation that plays a leading role in the humanitarian sector, both in Italy and internationally. This is reflected not only in the scale of its operations and the number of people it reaches, but also in the cultural and symbolic significance of an organisation that, for more than thirty years, has linked the right to healthcare with the promotion of a culture of peace.

It was with this understanding that we supported EMERGENCY in the development of its 2025 Social Report: a wide-ranging project created in collaboration with the NGO’s different departments and designed to provide a transparent account of the work carried out throughout the year.

An international organisation with Italian roots

EMERGENCY is an independent international organisation founded in 1994 to provide free, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines and poverty, while promoting a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights.

Over more than thirty years, it has provided care to millions of people in 22 countries, built healthcare facilities and trained local staff. Today, EMERGENCY operates in 11 areas around the world, with more than 4,000 people working across the organisation and over 2,400 volunteers active in Italy and abroad. In 2025, expenditure on EMERGENCY’s international operations exceeded €53 million. During the year, more than 18,000 surgical procedures were carried out, over 800,000 medical consultations were provided and 783 people were rescued at sea.

These figures convey the scale of the organisation, but their full meaning emerges when they are viewed alongside the projects, communities and people behind them.

A report built around data and first-hand accounts

The Social Report is designed to communicate and measure the results achieved by the organisation and is one of its key tools for ensuring transparency towards stakeholders.

The 2025 edition brings together quantitative data, financial information, in-depth analysis and qualitative insights. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive view of EMERGENCY’s activities, achievements and future outlook, while also allowing readers to track developments over time through comparisons with previous years.

Amapola supported the project from its earliest stages, beginning with a kick-off workshop and strategic advisory work. We then helped define the structure and contents of the report, developed its narrative framework and edited the texts, bringing together different voices and contributions within a coherent overall story.

Voices from local staff

One of the defining features of the project was the involvement of staff from the countries and communities where EMERGENCY operates.

Through a series of remote video interviews, we gathered first-hand accounts from local staff, bringing their experiences, expertise and day-to-day challenges to the fore. Their voices offer readers a closer view of the realities behind each project and highlight the human and professional contribution required to provide free, high-quality healthcare even in the most challenging settings.

Including these perspectives in the report made it possible to complement the data with a more immediate account of the organisation’s work: not only what was achieved, but also who made it possible and what working in the field means on a daily basis.

Reporting on a commitment that crosses borders and communities

Working on EMERGENCY’s Social Report required care, clarity and a deep respect for the complexity of the organisation. The challenge was to create a document that was both rigorous and accessible, bringing together the scale of its activities, the diversity of the contexts in which it operates and the consistency of a mission that has remained steadfast over time.

The result is a report that documents the work carried out while placing the people, expertise and choices behind it at the centre of the story — the elements that enable EMERGENCY to continue defending the right to healthcare and promoting a culture of peace.
