Tuesday 14 February sees the presentation at the Triennale in Milan. The initiative has been set up to study the phenomenon of climate immigration and establish a recognised legal status for environment immigrants.

The climate and environmental crisis has effects on people’s lives. These include growing mass immigration flows, at global level. Le Rotte del Clima – Climate Routes – is the first Italian project set up to build an understanding of the phenomenon and establish an agreed definition of the term environment and climate immigrant with a view to ensuring a protected status. The project will be presented on Tuesday 14 February at 6.30 p.m. at the Milan Triennale: registrations here. The participants include Tommaso Sacchi, Milan City Councillor for Culture, Stefano Boeri, President of the Triennale, Veronica Dini, President of the Centro Studi Systasis and promoter of the project, Margherita Romanelli, Coordinator of EU Programmes and International Policies, Advocacy, Partnership and Evaluation at We World, and Francesca Biondi Dal Monte, an associate professor in Constitutional Law at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. The talk will be moderated by Sara Milanese, a broadcaster with Radio Popolare.

A clearly established phenomenon

The official data show that every year around the world millions of people migrate, for environment-related reasons. The United Nations believes that for environmental causes alone, an exodus of 200 million people will be possible by 2050. The latest IDMC annual report documents the following situation in 2020: disasters in 145 countries and territories displaced 30.7 million people.

The Climate Routes initiative wants to build a picture of the immigration phenomenon, and foster awareness (among operators and immigrants) of the condition of the environmental/climate immigrant and their rights, starting with an examination of their experiences. The project promoters include the Centro Studi Systasis, and partners include We World, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, HRIC, ASGI, A Sud Onlus.

Amapola created the logo for the project, is handling media relations and will produce the web content. For us it is a pleasure to contribute to an extremely innovative initiative concerned with the great issues of our times like climate crisis and immigration, questions that affect each one of us and are particularly close to the heart of our agency and its team.
