Arriva Italia Publishes Its First Certified Sustainability Report, Strengthening Its ESG Commitment
Double materiality, third-party certification, and a local focus: Arriva Italia’s 2023 Sustainability Report, developed in collaboration with Amapola, sets a new benchmark for transparency and accountability.
As a leader in public transport,Arriva Italia, has unveiled its first certified Sustainability Report. Developed in partnership with Amapola, this document strengthens the company’s ESG strategy and aligns with upcoming European sustainability reporting directives.
The report offers a clear overview of the company’s progress and goals, sharing them with its stakeholders. Arriva Italia is driving its sustainable transformation with a fleet transitioning to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles while adopting eco-friendly fuels such as HVO and CNG. On the social side, the report highlights initiatives in corporate welfare, accessibility projects, and solutions focused on the well-being of both employees and passengers. With 41 million passengers, a workforce of 1,463 employees, and a fleet of 1,317 vehicles, Arriva Italia strengthens its commitment to responsible mobility in every aspect.
Innovations: Double Materiality and Certification
The 2023 Sustainability Report introduces the concept of double materiality, a method that evaluates both the company’s social and environmental impact and the influence of ESG issues on its economic performance. To define its material topics, Arriva Italia, with our support, actively involved its stakeholders to integrate their perspectives into the company’s strategic approach. “Double materiality is one of the most prominent topics in the new CSRD directive,” says Giulia Devani, Head of Amapola’s Reporting Division, “and it presents a challenge in terms of implementing new processes within organizations. Companies need guidance during this delicate phase to understand how to adapt regulatory requirements to their specific context.”
The added value of certification, provided by an independent audit body, further underscores the reliability of the reporting methodology used, including double materiality. This achievement enhances the company’s transparency, reliability, and credibility.
Amapola’s Contribution: From Reporting Strategy to Document Communication
We supported Arriva Italia throughout the entire project: from data collection and analysis to stakeholder engagement, text drafting, and the design of the report, as well as the certification phase. On the creative side, we designed an accessible and engaging layout with tables, infographics, and a coordinated structure that improves both readability and the visual impact of the document.
We also developed various tools to amplify the report’s communication reach. These include a summary document, a series of social media cards showcasing the key achievements, and a video infographic summarizing the milestones for digital channels. These tools ensure effective and immediate communication with a broader audience. The translation of both the report and its summary further facilitated stakeholder access to the information.
As in previous years, we also prepared six regional adaptations of the report, enabling direct and contextualized dialogue with the specific communities where Arriva Italia operates. These versions offer tangible tools to help people understand the company’s actual impact in their local areas.
