Umane: Amapola’s new Impact and Sustainability Report is online
A journey through our Benefit Company’s 2023, a year devoted to sustainability, gender parity and inclusivity, with a distinctive linguistic choice: use of the feminine as the default gender.
Our latest Impact and Sustainability Report, entitled Umane, explains who we are and who we want to become. In thinking about this, we decided to take an unusual narrative approach inspired by the University of Trento: to use the feminine form as the default gender, a move that led us to examine the ways language can emphasise or exclude and be a tool for equity and inclusivity.
Agency founder Luca Valpreda explains: “This year’s concept is the result of an analysis of our identity and what unites us all as human beings. Another driver was the now inescapable presence of artificial intelligence in our lives and in our agency’s consultancy work. This is a pressing issue in relation to the approach we want to take to environmental and social topics.”
Common benefit and community in our Impact Report
Since we embarked on our journey as a Benefit Company in 2021, we have never stopped working for the common good. And we take great pride in the numbers we have reached: more than 1,500 hours devoted to our benefit targets, 18 projects launched for the communities in which we operate and more than 4,000 people affected by our communication and engagement activities.
2023 was also a year for certifications, with important milestones including recognition for gender parity, quality and the EcoVadis bronze medal for our ESG commitment.
We continued to promote the sustainability culture with initiatives like our podcast on environmental communication and our Voci | Words without limits series, which shines a light on crucial social issues. We also took part in many pro bono events, offered free training for more than 700 students and worked with the CSR Show on the Meet the CSR Leaders project for young people interested in pursuing a career in sustainability (the project was repeated in 2024).
“How can we really generate a positive impact? This is the question that guides our decision-making in our benefit activities,” say the members of the Amapola Impact Board, Silvia Bonzano, Micol Burighel, Elisa De Bonis and Irene La Porta. “The result is attention to the communities in which our offices are located, a commitment to gender parity, all our information initiatives and our projects for the younger generations. The leitmotif is always our identity.”
The importance of the territory and the network
Our commitment doesn’t stop there. We are active members part of the Torino Social Impact network and of Assobenefit, working with them on training initiatives and events for benefit companies. Our Impact and Sustainability Report also describes our internal projects, such as across-the-board training to valorise the skills of every person on the team and agency volunteering to support women who are victims of abuse.
“The Impact Report is an essential transparency and relational tool for benefit companies,” comments Giulia Devani, Head of the Reporting Area, who is involved in drafting the Amapola report every year. “It sets out the impacts of the new business model and tells the organisation’s stakeholders about its effects. It needs to be implemented in a serious, methodical manner, but also in a spirit of exploration.”
