“The food transition for everyone”: Amapola with Carrefour Italia for the 2022 Sustainability Report
The ambitious sustainability-oriented goals of the new 2023-2026 Group Strategic Plan at the heart of Carrefour Italia’s 2022 Sustainability Report. A project by Amapola in partnership with SCS Consulting.
Fight against waste and food poverty, reduction of emissions, energy impacts and packaging, promotion of biodiversity throughout the supply chain, commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This is how Carrefour Italia intends to achieve one of its most ambitious priorities: the food transition for everyone. A description of how the organisation is working towards this goal, and the related results and projects, are set out in the Carrefour Italia 2022 Sustainability Report. For the second year, Amapola is assisting the company on the project, in partnership with SCS Consulting.
The responsibility of a sustainable supply chain
The Carrefour Group runs around 1,500 outlets in 19 Regions of Italy, employs more than 12,000 people and has close ties with the communities and areas where it operates. It views sustainability as a strategic growth driver and is committed to promoting cultural change to achieve a positive impact. This is the thinking behind the decision to become a Benefit Company and translate its social and environmental commitment into action. The move took place in July 2023.
Carrefour Italia’ second Sustainability Report is published at an important time for the entire Group: the roll-out of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, which establishes close ties between its business goals and sustainability objectives.
In environmental terms, some of the key figures from 2022 include packaging savings of 93 tonnes, a 41% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with 2019, a 36% decrease in food waste, recycling of 71% of waste. Completing the picture, Carrefour Italia is implementing a series of projects to protect biodiversity, promote animal welfare and combat deforestation, acting as a strategic link between producers and suppliers on one hand, and end consumers on the other. To ensure a food transition for everyone, Carrefour involves its supply chain operators on initiatives, from raising customer awareness in its sales outlets to the 2022 Food Transition Pact signed with 40 suppliers.
Social and economic sustainability
Sustainability is also an economic question. Given rising prices and accelerating inflation, protecting customers’ purchasing power was one of the challenges that saw Carrefour Italia on the front line in 2022.
To close the circle, the company has set up a range of social projects to strengthen its support for local communities and guarantee an inclusive and positive working environment for all its people. It has taken action in the fight against food poverty, providing support for needy families and promoting inclusive accessible shopping for everyone, with a special focus on people with disabilities. The creation of an increasingly inclusive workplace has been achieved through projects to valorise female talents and adopt policies to defend the work-life balance and quality of life for employees, such as flexibility and smart working.
The project for the Carrefour Italia 2022 Sustainability Report
The 2022 Sustainability Report, a document fully aligned with the company’s objectives, illustrates in a simple, transparent and accessible form Carrefour Italia’s commitment with the intention of reaching all its stakeholders. Amapola coordinated the work and the graphics-visual project, as well as the report summary.
The report takes a linear narrative approach and employs warm, personal graphics, enhanced with illustrated tables and the faces of Carrefour people. Tables and highlight pages alternate and a series of different reading levels are presented, to make it easy to find information and data. The close attention to accessibility issues also continues in the Summary of the Sustainability Report, an editorial product designed to broaden the report’s readership.
